There is a Lot More to Gravel than the Well Known Crunch Familiar when Walking over a Country House Driveway, First of All, We Design with the Owner their Ideal Driveway and Pathways. Once an Overall plan is Agreed, we look at the Scope and ensure all Drainage requirements are considered, we install Land drains where needed and pre plan where water is able to run off Naturally onto Lawns etc, where appropriate.

We then Excavate the Site and remove the Spoils, usually bringing in a Grab loader.   A Border is constructed which could be Concrete pavers, Granite Sets or any of an array of other materials available fit for purpose.  This edge is Solidly yet discreetly Haunched in with Concrete.

We lay a Membrane over the entire area to supress weeds and tree Roots from growing from beneath the new Driveway.

We Bring in the base material which we lay 200mm deep and this is Mechanically Compacted.  Once this base layer is Solid, The Customers Choice of Top Dressing is Layed on top, Specifically Two or Three Stones Thick. This is the Skill. Any more, The Stones Move and form Ruts and Piles and is Particularly difficult to walk on, Like Shingle on the Beach. any Less and the Driveway base Peeps through..
